Lidia Maria Hernandez Lopez was nicknamed La India Canela [The Cinnamon Indian] by a radio host who said that the name described her look and the flavor of her merengue music. La India Canela went on to win the Casandra, the Dominican Republic's highest prize in the arts, but still finds her inspiration in the warmth of the traditional music she plays.
