Rafael Salas - Substituting Emptiness
Substituting Emptiness
By Rafael Salas | September, 2007
The dramatic paintings of "Substituting Emptiness" included portraits, still lifes, and landscapes, but the subject matter transcended the images presented to illuminate and explore the void that haunts the human heart. In his own words, the artist's study of the world "describes the ghostly romance of memory, the longing that the past creates, and reflects these traps of nostalgia." His work presented a series of dichotomies that define the art and its subjects: one review of his work called his perspective "a world ours and oneiric" and "elusive and so everyday as to be overlooked."
